Switzerland - Meeting the Relatives

Ancestral home of the Hullingers / Hollingers / Holligers - Hallvill, Seegun, Bonisvil, Eglisvill, Canton Aargau, west of Zurich, north of Luzerne.

This is our favorite part of Switzerland. Our ancestors left the area in 1735 to emigrate to the US. It is unspoiled and uncrowded, and undiscovered by most tourists. The small lake of Hallvil has excursion boats that tour the lake during the day, providing convenient access to all parts of the Lake.

It boasts the charming castle of Hallwyl, located on Lake Hallwil. The castle is small and easily visited, and boasts excellent English translation phones that work well. The charming towns of Hallvill, Seegun, Bonisvil, and Eglisvill are nearby - these are the towns that the Holligers lived in, beginning with Henri in 1425. Our ancestor immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1735.

The high part of our visit was spending two evenings with Elizabeth & Elizabeth & Christoph Holliger. We had met Elizabeth 1984 before and had a nice visit. We had walked into Elizabeths place of business in 1984, announcing that we "were her cousins, from the US.” We compared our respective genealogies and had determined that we were distantly related from the 1600's. 13th cousins as I recall. Elizabeth brought her son and daughter in law, and we joined them for dinner on two different visits. So Christoph and I had the distinct pleasure of dining with three lovely Elizabeths.

Our Swiss cousins are very charming, intelligent and well educated. Elizabeth is now retired from her long career running Fruettiger-Holliger. Christoph is a Professor of Physics and his wife Elisabeth works in mental health.

Christoph is a renaissance man. In addition to being a PhD, he is the Director of International Relations for the Fachhochscule Aarau, University of Applied Science. He completed a project in Bolivia providing solar hot water and potable water for poor areas and travelled to India to work on a project in that country. He built his own energy efficient home, complete with his own sheep, chickens, garden, and home made schnaps. He also weaves and is a skilled artist. Beth was interested in how alike Christoph is to his American cousins. He and his son are both scientists, as were Clif Hullinger and his son Scott Hullinger.

The Seehotel Hallwil is located on the east side of the lake in the town of Meisterschwanden. It has great rooms overlooking the lake, a fine restaurant, and friendly staff.

Switzerland is a picture book country, with magnificent mountains, beautiful lakes, great trails, and quaint towns. The country has four official languages (German, French, Italian, and Romanch), and many people speak several of these languages plus English.

The Country is small, and you see a great deal in a few days. We enjoy simply wandering the country, taking in the sites.

Luzerne is a beautiful city, overlooking a beautiful river, lake, and Alps. You can easily spend a few days here. But when the weather is fine, you want to be outside and in the country.

On fine days, we take to the hills, and ride a ski lift up the Alps. Many areas have paths and trails that you can take around the mountains, and back to your car or train station. Make sure you get a usable map, and that you choose a trail that does not exceed your abilities.

Geneva is in the French portion of the country, located on Lake Geneva. We drove into Lake Geneva from France, took the train to Florence for the third and final time to pick up my computer, then back to Geneva.

History and Genealogy
of Pearl Harlan Hullinger

Our grandmother Pearl Harlan Hullinger was proud of her family heritage. She wrote of her family in Memories and Milestones:

https://memoriesandmilestoneshullinger.blogspot.com/

The charts below show how Pearl was related back to James Harland in England.

We know more about our Harlan ancestors than the Hullinger's mostly because of the book below. The extended Harlan Family  also has an excellent web page and newsletter:  http://harlanfamily.org/

The following information for the first generations of Harlan(d)s is quoted from the "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" by Alpheus Harlan. The numbering system also follows that which is in the book.

James HARLAND #1 was born about 1625 in Bishoprick, Durham, England. He died in England. He was buried in England. From "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" by Alpheus Harlan-

"James Harland, Yeoman and member of the Episcopal Church, was b. about the year 1625 in the "Bishoprick, Nigh Durham, England," and is the earliest paternal ancestor known to the family in America bearing the name Harlan. He lived and d. an Englishman, and was bur. upon English soil, no one to-day knows where. Tradition says that the name of his father was William."

"That James Harland was married according to the usages of the Established Church there is no doubt. That his children were baptized and recorded therein is fully established by the fact that the earliest record we have of his son, George, is that he was "Baptised at the Monastery Monkwearmouth* in Oald England."

"We have no record giving the name of the wife and mother. So far as is known, James Harland was the father of three sons:"

*
Craig and Beth Hullinger visited both monastery churches where out ancestor was baptized in 1650 - lovely place going back well over 1,000 years. The Venerable Bede wrote his famous history of England in this monastery. The photos are of Church where our ancestor George Harland was christened.

Monastery Monkwearmouth where our ancestor George Harlan was baptized. The Venerable Bede, who wrote the first history in the English Language, worked here.

The sarcophagus of a Knights Templar in our ancestor's church.

wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkwearmouth-Jarrow_Abbey

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarrow

"*Monkwearmouth Monastery was founded by Benedict Biscop in the year A.D.672. It is situated in a town of the same name in the east division of Chester, County Durham, and one-half mile north of Sunderland. It receives its name from its location near the mouth of the river Wear. Burned and plundered time and again, only the tower and some detached parts of the church remain of the once celebrated monastery. In 1790 the parish registers, with the exception of some of the late records, were destroyed by fire, and it is probable that information of untold value perished in the flames."

James HARLAND #1 had the following children:

2 i. Thomas HARLAND
3 ii. George HARLAN
4 iii. Michael HARLAN

SECOND GENERATION

3. George HARLAN was born in 1650. He was christened on 11 Mar 1650 in Monkwearmouth, Durham, England. He died in Jul 1714 in Kennet, Chester, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Jul 1714 in Center Meeting Burying Grounds, Chester County, Pennsylvania. From "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" by Alpheus Harlan- "George Harlan, Yeoman, "Ye sone of James Harland of Monkwearmouth, was Baptised at the Monastery of Monkwearmouth in Oald England, ye 11th Day of First Month 1650." He was b. "Nigh Durham in Bishoprick, England," and remained there until he reached manhood, when, in company with his brother and others, he crossed into Ireland and located in the County Down.

While residing there he m. by ceremony of Friends, 9, 17, 1678, Elizabeth Duck. George Harlan* brought his family to America in 1687, and the nine years intervening were without doubt spent in the above named-parish and county, and there, too, in all probability, his first four children were born. He d. in "Fifth Month" (July), 1714, and was buried beside his "deare wife in the new burying grounds on Alphonsus Kirk's land,"which was afterwards, and is yet, Center Meeting Burying Grounds. George and Elizabeth were parents of nine children:”

"*After coming to America George and Michael Harland dropped the final "d" and the name is almost universally spelled Harlan."

Alphaeus Harlan citing the Marriage Book of Lurgan Mo. Mtg., p.91: "George Harland, of Parish of Donahlong, Co. Down, Ireland, and Elizabeth Duck, of Lurgan, Parish of Shankill, Co. Armagh, were married "at the house of Marke Wright in ye Parish of Shankill," 9 Mo. 17, 1678.

Signers to the certificate: Henry Hollingsworth, Wm.Porter, George Harland, John Calvert, Timothy Kirk, Elizabeth Harland, Roger Kirk, Alphonsus Kirk, Robert Hoope, Elinor Hoope, Deborah Kirk, Thomas Harland

Alphaeus Harlan citing Wm Stockdale's "A Great Cry of Oppression."- "George Harland had taken from him for Tithe, by Daniel Mac Connell...twelve stooks and a half of Oats, three stooks and a half of Barley, and five loads of Hey, all worth ten shillings ten pence."

"No certificate of the membership of George Harland with Friends is upon record, but his marriage certificate shows us that at that time he was a member, and as early as "Tenth Month" (December), of 1687, was placed upon committees of responsibility in Friends' affairs in his new neighborhood. At the time of his residence in Ireland, William Penn was urging Friends of England to become settlers upon his lands, cautioning them, however, against "leaving their own country out of idle curiosity or of a rambling disposition." But names signed above we find later in the new world, and, as we have seen, George was buried upon "Alphonsus Kirk's land." So they were not without friends when they made their settlement near the Delaware.

"In the early months of the year 1687, in company with his wife and four children, and his brother Michael, then unmarried, he took ship at Belfast for America. They had bought lands before coming * which were within that part of the Province of Pennsylvania now embraced in the County of New Castle. Ascending the river Delaware they landed at the town of New Castle (now in Delaware State), and settled near the present town of Centreville. Here the elder brother remained for some years, and about 1698/99, having purchased higher up the Brandywine Creek, he moved his family and settled in what is now ** Pennsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

*"From the old warrants granted "within the County of New Castle, on Delaware,: we learn that "George Harland" and "James & Thomas Harlin" purchased lands there in the summer of 1686, and that "James Harland" did likewise in January of 1701.

**"It was then in Kennett, but later the township was subdivided."

More information to be found on pages 4 - 7 in Alphaeus Harlan's book.

He was married to Elizabeth DUCK (daughter of Ezekeliah DUCK and Hannah HOOPE) on 17 Sep 1678 in Down Co., Ireland. Elizabeth DUCK was born on 5 May 1660 in Shankill, Armagh, Ireland. Lurgan Parish She died before 1714. George HARLAN #3 and Elizabeth DUCK had the following children:

James Harlan (August 26, 1820 – October 5, 1899) was a member of the United States Senate and a U.S. Cabinet Secretary.

[edit]Biography

Harlan represented the state of Iowa in the United States Senate as a member of the Free Soil Party in 1855. In 1857 the Senate declared the seat vacant because of irregularities in the legislative proceedings that first elected Harlan to the Senate. He was then re-elected to the Senate by the Iowa legislature as a Republican and continued to hold his Senate seat until 1865.
In 1865 he resigned elected office to become Secretary of the Interior under President Andrew Johnson, an appointment he held until 1866. As secretary he announced that he intended to "clean house" and fired "a considerable number of incumbents who were seldom at their respective desks".[1] Amongst this group was the poet Walt Whitman, then working as a clerk in the department, who received his dismissal note on June 30, 1865.[2] Harlan had found a copy of Leaves of Grass on Whitman's desk as the poet was making revisions and found it to be morally offensive. "I will not have the author of that book in this Department", he said. "If the President of the United States should order his reinstatement, I would resign sooner than I would put him back."[3] 29 years later, however, he defended his actions, saying that Whitman was dismissed solely "on the grounds that his services were not needed".[1]
Harlan resigned from the post in 1866 when he no longer supported the policies of President Johnson. He was elected again to the United States Senate in 1867 and served until 1873.
From 1853 to 1855, Harlan was president of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where, following his career of public service, he resided until his death in 1899. Along with pioneer Iowa governor Samuel Kirkwood, Harlan's sculptured likeness is maintained among the two coveted statues apportioned to each state on display under the rotunda in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Harlan was a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln and his family. In 1868 his daughter, Mary Eunice Harlan, married Robert Todd Lincoln.

Our Trip to Check out Our Harlan Ancestral Locations

England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland

We spent several weeks in these attractive countries. Very green and pretty. And very rainy. Rains most of the time. The people are great. Very open and friendly.

We took the ferry from Wales, which is also very green and rainy. We drove around the perimeter of the Island, checking out castles and cute towns.

Many of the port towns were founded by Norwegian Vikings, who conquered and took over.

I am part Norwegian. Is there no end to the depredations of we Norwegian Vikings?

Obviously an early version of the the US Marine Corps of which I am a proud part.

Saw a special on the Vikings. Researchers are doing genetic testing of males in Ireland and England to see how many are descended from Vikings. Judging from the blue eyes, quite a few.

My middle name is Harlan. The Harlans were part of the Protestant Plantation people from Scotland and England, that the English sent to occupy and take over Ireland. Our branch quickly left to go to America, but one branch who stayed started a large and famous ship building company, Harlan and Wolfe, in Belfast.

The most famous thing that that company did was to build the Titanic. So you can see that I come by my ability to destroy things and screw things up honestly.

We visited the old sod in Lugan, Parish of Snankill, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Home of my GGGGGGGGParents George Harlan & Elizabeth Duck , and her parents Ezekeliah Duck and Hannah Hoope. Elizabeth was born on 5 May 1660, and married George on Sep 17, 1678. Four kids born in Ireland, including our GGGGGGGGP, then moved to US in 1687.

There is only one Duck in the Northern Ireland Phonebook, and no Hoopes. There are 22 Harlands.

But get this. There are 30 Hollingers!!!! The Hollingers are from Switzerland. What are they doing here? We Hollingers / Hullingers are like bad pennies, showing up everywhere.

Ireland is very prosperous, and good to see it doing well after so many tough years. But there is still evidence of the troubles in Norther Ireland. Hope they get it all resolved.

We will take the Ferry to Norway in a few days. Our trip is getting short. It is now June 3, and we will head back no later than July 10, unless we get tired and come back sooner. Five months.

England & Wales

We returned from Ireland by ferry to Scotland. We spent a little time in a Kirkcudbright, a nice town that attracted us because it is the McClellan Castle, which is the name of our friend Larry McClellan. We took some pictures for Larry.

We spent several days in York, a great town with Roman, Anglo Saxon, Viking, and Norman roots. The Vikings took the place over. My mother is Norwegian, and my father has routes in this part of England, so I always enjoy speculating about the possible interaction of my mothers Viking ancestors with my fathers ancestors.

Our many times Great Grandfather was a Navy Captain who backed Cromwell in the civil war. His brother was an Army Captain who backed the King. The Army uncle did the best, getting a large estate and manor house near York in the community of Sutton on the Forest. This Harlan line died out, but the impressive manor and garden are open for visits. Very grand.

We drove up to Monkwearmouth, a town named for being where Monks were at the mouth of the Wear River. It is now part of the town of Sunderland, on the coast near Newcastle.

We went to the church where my distant grandfather was baptized in 1650. The church is an ancient building, and was once part of a major monastery where the Venerable Bede wrote the first history of England. Three saints came from this monastery. Vikings sacked the monastery, and took over the region. (Once again, examples of my mothers ancestors harassing my fathers ancestors).
