Moving West

All of ancestors continued to move west.  They left various parts of Europe, immigrating first to Delaware or Pennsylvania, then gradually moving west to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and then South Dakota. They moved with the frontier, seeking land and economic opportunity.

We know the most about our grandparents and great grandparents move from Iowa to South Dakota. They experienced it and wrote about it in Memories and Milestones.  But most of our older ancestors did the same thing. The map and table below shows the locations of our Harlan ancestors.  They originated in Yorkshire, England, then immigrated to Ireland, and then to the British Colonies in the new world. Each generation or two would move further west.

Lewis Harlan, Pearl's Grandfather, moved from Indiana to Peoria, Illinois when he was 14 with his family. They pioneered the Illinois frontier, acquiring land and developing their farms.
